Talk:April Fools' Day comics

Explain xkcd: It's 'cause you're dumb.

"There was no april fool's comic in 2023." There was, and it's called escape speed - it was just the latest they ever made (see here for my citation.) B for brain (talk) 20:35, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Thanks. I did not see this until others (involed in the making of the comic) wrote to me on my talk page. I now agree it was such a comic, but had not seen this proff before. --Kynde (talk) 08:57, 7 April 2024 (UTC)

Moving to its own page[edit]

I think the text of the category is currently too hidden and in the wrong place. I bet almost now one clicking [Expand] expects such a long page to appear. We should have a page for April Fools' comics (do not create it on its own, it'll break page moving!), and keep the category for people who just want the links. Thoughts? --FaviFake (talk) 18:44, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

This should be the case with all Category:FOO pages that currently have an attempt to more or less itemise and extermporise about all the comics that then appear in the the actual membership list below. A simple "What this category is" should suffice, and would also not become outdated the moment that any new (or old!) comic gets given Category:FOO membership.
And if there's a big need to further categorise all items in a category by various criteria, create such appropriate sub-categories. Going into minutiæ about each is what each actual comic (or other-so-saved) page should already be doing. You can always summarise "of the <N> comics in this category, <M> were...", and shove bulleted (and sub-bulleted) analyses into a "Series Explanation" page with prose/tables/graphs/combinations-of-these/whatever. 172.68.205.134 21:07, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
I agree we should move all the long category explanation to their own pages, but I don't mind them being kept up to date. It's certainly easier to read an article than 20 different comic pages' trivia sections. --FaviFake (talk) 11:30, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
I made these lists because I was tired of trying to keep track of all the different things. So I think they are important, but there could be a link to a similar named page, that is not a category for such details. Just like for a comic characters appearances vs. their description. So April fools' category and April Fools' on xkcd explanation. Same goes for New Year, Christmas, comic series etc. I did hide it under the expansion, and if yo just wished the list of fools' comics then they are easily accessed as it is now. And if you wish more details then that is under the button. What you expect to find there I see no relevance for. If you are not interested you would never click it anyway. I would be very sorry to see the details deleted, as I think it is interesting. And it is not harming anyone. But would not object to having new pages made for these list and info, that are not the category pages. With link between the two pages like for characters. --Kynde (talk) 13:06, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
Thanks for replying! I want to start moving everything to a new non-category page (like for character appearances and description, as you said), but we should probably change the links to these pages? Someone would need to go though 50 comic pages and determine if the link should go to the category or to the description. Or maybe we shouldn't, after all there'll be a prominent link at the top of the category. Idk but there definitely are other things i need to do other than this. --FaviFake (talk) 14:35, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
I've moved the page and changed links in the articles. I also updated the name, fixing capitalisation and adding "Day". --FaviFake (talk) 17:45, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

Restructuring as a table or a nice list[edit]

Hey, I'm not sure why but there are two different lists of the same April fools' comics, each with info that the other one doesn't have. I think we should merge them. We could use:

Either a table like this:

Number Comic Was it comic or another thing? Explanation Date
Posted on April 1st? That year's April first fell on a Mon, Wed, or Fri Posted late
2 unixkcd Was another thing (user interface change) For April 1st, 2010, Randall altered the site to mimic a Unix command-line interface and called it unixkcd. This happened wile 721: Flatland was the newest comic, but it was released March 31st and had nothing to do with April Fools' Day. For more information, see its trivia section. April 1st, 2010 Monday No
Or we could also use
A list like this, but it might be hard to fit everything we know in a list.

What do you think? --FaviFake (talk) 17:58, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
